I have a new Beneteau 40 in lake Ontario and have just gone through its haul out. In hauling out, the requirement is for the mast to be removed. However, next year I am considering a haul out with the mast on. I heard that keep the mast on over the winter may cause stress on the deck and produce cracks. What is your opinion of the advantages and disadvantages of keep the mast on over the winter.

This discussion comes up this time of year.

I see no problem with leaving the mast up over the winter, as do 90% of the boats in the Penetanguishene / Midland area. You will find a lot of opinions both ways in the arhcives. That said, in our area, although it can get very windy, for most of the winter we are protected from direct winds off Georgian Bay, not like Ontario that is more exposed to Southerly winds.

As far as stress on the deck, metal shrinks in the winter, shortening the length of your mast and thereby lessening the stress on the rigging. IMHO anyways. It also depends on your marina. Ours has a travellift that is capable or hauling boats with the msat up, a crane will not pull the boat with the mast up, that is used in most yacht clubs.

No major boat failures or damage here....
