Haul out bottom paint

Thinking of having my 27 Hunter hauled out and bottom painted and cutlass bearing changed too. Never ever had to do that before so I was hoping someone can give me an idea as far as cost and maybe which place around here that can do it without being the most expensive. I'm located in Saint Pete Marina Florida so need something pretty close to my location but not crazy expensive. Again, never had it done before and my boat gets scraped once a month by a diver for the last 5 months but I'm thinking just to be sure and have the bottom refinished. Also once the bottom done, do I still have the hull scraped every month or will that mess up the new paint?

Depends what paint you and back in 08 i used a real soft ablative and diver said not to
have it cleaned and last 6 years have been using seahawk semi hard and do have a diver clean my bottom every 6 -8 weeks.
Can't help with where to go but I always ask around local boaters where and who to use for best price.

Don't know cost in Florida, but in Virginia it was $28/ft plus paint, plus cost of bearing etc. My H30 cost about $950 for haul & paint. You wouldn't want to scrape the new paint. Might want to broom it once a month to help keep slime down. If you have it done, you'll be amazed at how much faster you go for a given wind speed. Well worth the money if you can do it. Ask boat owners at marinas who they use. Word of mouth is best info.

Can't help you with St. Pete, but we have a diver every six to eight weeks and he gives us a report on the status of our bottom paint. I know,we have a bottom job coming soon.

You could begin by getting quotes from several divers. Ask them for recommendations on marinas. Other owners should provide paint recommendations but definitely do an ablative. I would find a yard like mine here in Ohio where I can do my own work. I have always done the bottom and the bearing myself. When the boat was just north of you in Port Richey I had a diver every five weeks. Always wondered if a better paint could have saved me some dive money.

How long bottom paint last and how often need diver is very different
in every location and here in Punta Gorda a boat with a canal into harbor will be very different to a boat further up into the canal system, how much in and out water makes big difference.
We have a yard that chargers $30 per ft everything is included no extra chargers unless maybe like bad blisters.

In a region of high fouling (which I assume is the case in St. Petersburg), anti fouling paint will not eliminate fouling growth. It will merely retard it. So yes, you will still need to have the hull cleaned on a regular basis.

In that location if the boat sits most of the time, then it will need cleaning once a month. Growth is different in different areas. Some places just weeds/bushes grow on it, some just fungus type stuff, other places barnacles and others all three. You need to use a scraper to get barnacles off but a brush or green pad is fine for the other stuff.

It is no big deal to use a scraper on hard paint but very tricky to use on soft paint without taking all the paint off. The more you clean it the sooner you have to repaint due to cleaning taking paint off. If you sail at least once a week then you may be able to go months without cleaning. If the boat sits in brackish water that too will increase the time between cleanings needed.

The prop is another story. Props foul quickly so that may need to be cleaned every 2 weeks or just before use.

Not sure about St. Pete but I use a yard in Tarpon Springs that charges $40/ft. Haulout, cleaning, painting (your choice paint), running gear done, five days in yard, and splash included. I also use an ablative paint. Since I use the boat at least once a week, no growth problem except for the running gear and the water line and I clean that myself about twice a year. That being said, I had my boat in a marina up river where the water was somewhat brackish but now that I am up a canal in saltier water time will tell.
