I just bought the boat, while it was sitting in my driveway in the rain, water would apear below decks. The water was comming from the molding supporting the Lexan hatch cover. Since the Lexan hatch slides on this molding and it is not a water tight slide, water was dripping on the underside of the Lexan. I figured that their has to be a way to correct this problem, here is what I came up with. I went to the local Lowes and bought felt strips 1/4 inch wide and about 4 feet long roll, it comes with one side of the felt sticky with the paper that you strip off. I attached the felt strip all the way around the molding that the Lexan rides on, including the part under the fiberglass hatch. Now not only is it not leaking anymore but the Lexan slides so much better. Just thought you might like to know, and I would be interested in replies from the forum about this solution. While I was at it I also added a oak center brace below decks on the Lexan for added support (I noticed the "Not a step" sticker)

Fabric hatch cover

John, there is a very easy way around this problem, which I had on my H-16. I installed a sunbrella snap-on hatch cover that extends down over the hatch boards, and over the slider. Never had a leak since, and my teak hatch boards are protected. Believe me, this is well worth doing. You can purchase the cover through the Hunter chandlery. Good luck. Don Barber S/V Anodyne

water channels

Part of that molding is a water channel to allow water to run to the back and then away. If the boat is not level or bow high, water could over fill the channel at the front and run inside.

Only in America,LOL

The slide I was talking about is what supports the Lexan, inboard of the water channel, when I got the boat it was filled with pine needles and green growth, that was cleaned out before the rain, so far the felt strips have aided the sliding of the Lexan and with the boat unchanged angle... no water below decks...... Thanks for the comments. Just want to say that this foram has helped me with my Baummifying my Baums Rush

heat

One thing to be conserned about with a tacky solution is how it will stand up to exposure. Most tacky stips that I have seen will degrade in about 4-6 months of sun/heat exposure. then you would just have a sticky mess.

HI John

This is a brokerage boat that John bought. John, if you read this and still have some difficulty understanding, just give me a call. There are two teak strips on the slider hatch one of which you see when closing or opening the slider hatch. The other one is on top which you cannot see but keeps the slider from sliding out. In order to get it out, you will need to remove the entire lexan slider hatch from the fibergalss protion. Suggest two people do this. Once out, unscrew the top teak strip or stopper strip and remove any caulking. Recaulk with silicon but make sure you run the caulking all the way across the bottom of the tak strip. What is happening is water is coming underneath that teak stripe and flowing inside the cabin. That is probably the source and I caulk liberally the entire boottom of the teak so water cannot go under it and then down into the cabin. When cleaning, use denatured alcohol as acetone will melt the lexan Crazy Dave

Crazy Dave

What you discribed is exactly what I did, even to the alcohol use, I also gave the tek strips a going over with varnish, but I added the felt strips, I also treated the tek stopper and used liberal amount of silicon on it since the pressure of the Lexan is now resting on the felt I hope that the strips will last a season or longer, sure does make the Lexan slide nice. Did you get my e-mail about the black rubber stoppers I need for the cockpit lockers and captains seat locker? I need about 8 of them please bill me.
