I have a Catalina 30'. The teak slides mounted on top of the deck on either side of the main hatch must be replaced. [They have evidence of dry rot.] I think I would like to replace them with Starboard product or teak if necessary, but I don't know if anyone makes these parts.
Any suggetions who might fabricate these slides?

Hi Jody,
Catalina direct can get you some replacement parts, but Roger Long just did some work on his boat and had a thread showing the detail of his work. My boat is an 1981 and so far the hatch is fine. I did put some furniture slides on the bottom of the hatch to make it slide easier. I did the same for a friend in the next slip. Good luck.

Thank you for the reply, All U Get. I am fairly new to this website so I'm not familiar with what a "thread" is. Can you educate, please?
Thx

A "Thread" is a linked series of replies in response to an original post (or question). For example, you (jodygoldman) posted a question on 2/27, and the thread progressed through "All U Get" answering a little over 5 hours later , and your asking for some clarification (almost within minutes) - all on the same day.

This response - while not really helping you with your original question, is part of the "thread" of discussion that "All U Get" was mentioning.

There is a search feature associated with this website, and while I couldn't get a match on the phrase "Hatch Slide Replacement", or on Author "Roger Long", there are a number of "threads" about "hatch slides" and related issues.

Good Luck!

Hi Jody,
I'm not great with this website but if you look across the top of this screen there is a tab that says search. Click on that. You will see several options. Type in Companionway and you will get a list of ideas from the comments of other subscribers.

Hi Danha,
On my boat and my friends the hatch could lift about 1/2 inch while inside the wooden track. The trick was to get the furniture slides that have an adhesive on one side to stay in the track while the hatch cover was lifted over them. Once I had them in a good position I lowered the hatch onto them. Total cost about $3.

All U Get, Great idea on the slides. I have been spraying teflon dry lube, but that is a monthly task, and it doesn't last very long.

I have a pretty old boat, and will need to be replacing old teak parts myself. I replaced the teak under the pull handle on the hatch with PVC board. It did not come out too bad for a first attempt, but I should have templated the hatch instead of the old thinned/cracked teak. Next up are the teak rails that hold the hatchboards in.

Thanks!

If I had to replace that stuff I would try to get everything in starboard. I hate dealing with my exterior woodwork. I like the idea of the new boats with no exterior wood...smart...very smart.

I was pleased to see your reply, because Starboard is my first choice for replacement. I have not seen the new catalina's and wondered if that is what they are using? or do you know anyone who can make this piece? Remember, it is attached to the base of the traveler too.

I have an MKII and it has the improved traveler. Mine doesn't attach to the traveler. It runs under the traveler.

With a few tools you may be able to make it yourself. If not you should try a wood working shop.
