We need to replace the hatch on our O'Day 26. Having read through these and other forums, it seems that the Bomar 900 series was at some point a drop-in replacement, also sold by D&R Marine. Unfortunately, Bomar changed the outside lid dimensions on that particular hatch without updating their product specifications (on their Web site or with their dealers). So this particular hatch no longer fits.

It seems the Lewmar Ocean Hatch 40 (with flange base) has very similar dimensions, but I'm worried about the clearance needed behind the hinge in order to open the lid to a 90 degrees angle (as needed for installation)

Has anyone ever attempted to install an Ocean Hatch 40 on the O'Day 26?

Any other suggestions on what to replace the hatch with?

Thanks!

I think there was mention on D & R Marine's website that the 240, 26, and 272 all use the same forward hatch...I assume your talking about the v-berth hatch. If so, on the D & R website, they show the hatch and offer a screen with it...you might want to call Rudy and verify what I'm telling you....I would verify this with him before purchasing. I need a new one as well...Patrick

Hi Patrick - thanks for the pointer. I had looked at the D&R Marine Web site. The hatch they offer seems to be the Bomar 900 Series. Unfortunately, Bomar changed the lid dimensions of that series (without updating the specifications on their Web site or with their retailers), making the O.D. of Lid a little larger so that this hatch no longer fits onto the O'Day 26 - was also described at

One online retailer confirmed with Bomar that they indeed changed the dimensions, just as described in the discussion mentioned above. Have been trying to get in touch with Rudy via email, but might have to call him up.

If the Lewmar Ocean Hatch 40 would fit, that would b a nice hatch...

Thanks!

I'm certain it was the 900 series so it has changed....darn..I needed a new one...mine leaks where the lens and gasket meet on the edge...I've never had much luck emailing Rudy, have nearly always called. ..I'll keep thinking of alternatives, but the dimensions are critical...at least on the 272...Rudy calls it the ghut....the part that is thicker deck at front and rear.....pat

Pat - I heard that Rudy now has the hatch specifically manufactured for him "old-style", i.e. with the old dimensions. You might want to check with him explicitly.

In the meantime, we replaced our hatch with a Lewmar Ocean 40. A really nice aluminum hatch. It fits in without having to change the cutout.
