Hatch replacement - curved opening

I may have learned something new about the earlier Hunter 27's or I am missing something. I am replacing the forward hatch w/ a Bomar. The archives have some great info on the subject, except my existing opening has a curve to it and this doesn't seem to be addressed by anyone. I assume this was changed to a flat opening, anyone dealt with this situation?

Are differences

There are flat and curved.'77 curved,78?,'79 flat.How do i know? Back when this was a hot subject here on the forum and i detailed ease of installation,someone on the board very emphatically[?] brought this to my attention. As to dealing with this,don't recall anybody detailing their solutions.Sorry.

Our '77 is flat.

A little fiberglass fairing is probably part of your solution. I'd find a good glass worker and pick their brain. Then you will either know how to do the job, or have someone to do it for you.DavidLady Lillie

Front Hatch

I just replaced mine. But, in 1983 the surface was flat. I don't know how much curvature you have. But, I think I would grind the openning to fit the new hatch. Mark the new hatch line on the deck. Grind off the gell coat. Then build up with epoxy with lots of filler. (You'll probably have lots of places you want to use any excess.) Fair the filler and use lots of 3M100.Good luck, Bill

Just my luck mine would be curved. Im leaning towards grinding it down as opposed to making a wood collar, but will probably go with option #3, nothing and go sailing!

Go sailing! Unless, the leaks are doing damage inside.My new hatch sat in the V-berth for a year.
