Hatch Leak

I know, I know... how many more threads on this topic?

This Bomar hatch (the one just aft of the mast) seems to be leaking from behind the metal band in the cut out. The seal around the hatch itself seems to be solid. There is no evidence of water making its way past the gasket.

How does one remove the 'band' clean the cut out, apply sealant and reinstall?

Does this make sense? Total noobie when it comes to 'lead-boats'......

Thank you all....

Sorry for the picture.... I can't seem to rotate it!

My forward hatch is leaking, going to wait until she's on the hard and get the mast unstepped, then planning to fix the mast compression post problem before seriously addressing hatch leakage. I suspect deck deformation is the root cause of my problem.

I don't want to fix the problem twice.

Bomar's page gives some info on installation here [LINK] and may help reverse engineer the repair process.

Good luck!

Would this be a good application for Butyl Rubber?

I think you're probably right, Bob. You're thinking Maine Sail's product?

Inter20, this [LINK] is the stuff you may want to look into for the seal once you've figured out how to get it apart.

It looks as though I have to get a hammer and an arsenal of tools to pry, bang, and pray to get the old frame out?

Good God... what have I started:confused:

Once out, I have no problem with cleaning and reapplying sealant/ tape. What is the real process like of getting the old one out?

Thanks

Here's one more [LINK].

I think you're right, it is about slowly prying, then cutting the sealant. I'll take a look at mine tomorrow, I have a ton of boat honey-dos this weekend.

Yah, I looked at mine today and I believe you should do as the guy in the link above shows for his larger forward hatch.

Looks like (from above) you're supposed to take the pins out and the hatch itself off, remove the screws around the outside, slowly pry up the hatch and cut through the sealant, then rebed and reattach the screws and the hinge pins.
