superficial crazing on ports
Kandi, I have a 1990 P42 with significant external superficial crazing on all of my ports. We are careful about using proper cleaning materials, but I think that years of tropical cruising and direct sunlight has caused the crazing. That crazing, in addition to significant warping on my main windshield, led me to replace the main windshield. I spoke at length with a person who does nothing but marine plexiglas/lexan replacements about the crazing on my boat. His opinion was that as long as the crazing was superficial, and located on the outside of the ports, it did not create a problem. He opined that the crazing could weaken the material if you pushed from the direction opposite the crazing. This would be something similar to cutting glass: you deeply scratch one side and then push on the other side.Since the crazing presumably is on the outside of your ports, and any significant sea pressure would also come from the outside of the ports, you presumably would be all right. As an aside, after I replaced the main windshield, I tried to break the old one that I removed. I could not do so. I was astonished at the strength of the plexiglas. I'm still glad that I replaced it, since it had warped away from the main support over 3/4 of an inch, and it sometimes takes some pretty good seas. But I was very surprised at the strength of the crazed plexiglas.Should you decide to replace any of your crazed ports, it is not a difficult job. However, it will take considerable time to remove the old ports and clean up the area to receive the new ones. That silicone adhesive is VERY STRONG.Good luck in whatever you decide.
