I have a 1998 340 and the hatch in the galley seems to be crystalizing. Has this happen to anyone else. My other hatches that open are fine. I can just about see out of it. Does anyone know if this is covered under warranty? I'm afraid it is just going to just start leaking!

port or hatch

Kandi: Are you speaking about the opening hatch in the deck above the galley or the opening port above the stove?

same

Kandi and Mike, I have the same crazing like lines in the Lexan or whatever. This is in the both the hatches and the Lemar side ports. It only appears when you look at it from a certain angle in the sunlight. It looks like a breakdown of the material from the sunlight. I would sure like to be wrong. Mike D

Amonia causes crazing

As a note of caution, crazing can also be caused by using cleaners with amonia. There is an approved list of cleaners for use on Lexan. I'm not saying that is what happened but there are a lot of people out there that don't know about this and I'm saying it for their benefit.

Sounds like bad plastics

Sorry to hear of your problem. I wonder if I can ask you about it. 1) can you feel the crazing with your figers or nails. 2) is it near edges only or in middle too. 3) what color is the plastic. 4) if at all what have you cleaned it with. Please let me know some of these things if you can. I am a plastics fabricator & designer and may be able to help you with any problems you have or even suggest a product you can use. Ammonia -> Windex!

Windex w/ Ammonia will do it! I had to replace a window a few years ago after an accidental cleaning. -David

Also have Cracks in Lexan Galley window

Kandi, I have the same problem on my new 2000 340. I have not used anything to clean it but soap and water. When the sun shine's thru at a certain angle it looks like the window is shattered (galley port window Lewmar). If you look at theLewmar hatches I also see it slightly, depending on the angle the sun is hitting. I have reported to my dealer and waiting for their anwser. I'll let you know!

superficial crazing on ports

Kandi, I have a 1990 P42 with significant external superficial crazing on all of my ports. We are careful about using proper cleaning materials, but I think that years of tropical cruising and direct sunlight has caused the crazing. That crazing, in addition to significant warping on my main windshield, led me to replace the main windshield. I spoke at length with a person who does nothing but marine plexiglas/lexan replacements about the crazing on my boat. His opinion was that as long as the crazing was superficial, and located on the outside of the ports, it did not create a problem. He opined that the crazing could weaken the material if you pushed from the direction opposite the crazing. This would be something similar to cutting glass: you deeply scratch one side and then push on the other side. Since the crazing presumably is on the outside of your ports, and any significant sea pressure would also come from the outside of the ports, you presumably would be all right. As an aside, after I replaced the main windshield, I tried to break the old one that I removed. I could not do so. I was astonished at the strength of the plexiglas. I'm still glad that I replaced it, since it had warped away from the main support over 3/4 of an inch, and it sometimes takes some pretty good seas. But I was very surprised at the strength of the crazed plexiglas. Should you decide to replace any of your crazed ports, it is not a difficult job. However, it will take considerable time to remove the old ports and clean up the area to receive the new ones. That silicone adhesive is VERY STRONG. Good luck in whatever you decide.
