Has anyone installed an opening hatch Between the mast and the sliding hatch on a Oday 28?

I haven't had much luck getting info on this . We would like to get more air and light down the cabin. I was thinking something like a 18x18 or two small ones like the ones on the Catalina's

If it was me Bob, I'd check it out and ask myself these questions; Is cutting a hole in this area going to weaken the structure or cause problems with my mast and rigging? Are there any wires under the liner in this area? Will the hatch interfere with anything on the deck? Willl the cover obstruct my view when it's open while I'm sailing?

The O'Day 28 is one of my favorite boats. If I owned one and I wanted to modify it in the same way that I modified my little O'Day 222, I'd go for it and that includes adding a hatch in the area in question. I suppose the proper thing to do would be to would be to enlist the services of a boat surveyor and let him make the call, but I'm kind of cheap by nature and probably wouldn't do that. The way I look at it Bob is,--someone has to be the first to do a unique modification to his boat, why not me? I bought my boat new at a boat show in 1986 and I've never stopped doing mods to it, but it's always a good idea to inquire about a crucial change. I know that there will be sailors on this forum who will jump my bones for giving you this advice and I'm no expert on anything. In fact, my work tends to be kind of hacky but passable. So here goes; If you can't find anyone who has done this particular mod and had success, then check it out yourself, be sure you're right, and then go ahead.
