Hatch Boards

I need to replace my hatch boards. The originals were long gone by the time I bought it. Its a 1978, and I've owned it for five years. The present boards are four peices cut from plywood. They never were a great fit so I hesitate to use them as a pattern. Has any one done this recently? What is a good wood to use? (Teak is probably to expensive). I can probably find a boat near by with original boards from which to make a pattern. I have seen some boards replaced with translucent plastic. Has anyone tried this and been pleased with the result? Thanks, Jim
