Greetings: I am looking to replace the hatch boards on my 1980 H-27. The P.O. must have replaced the original boards with one piece of plywood ( I can't believe the boat came with this as the stock companionway door). Does anyone have pictures and better yet measurements of their boards? I want to be able to properly instruct the machine shop on how to cut the new boards. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks... LOU

Hatch Boards

Lou, I will be down at the boat this weekend and will bring my camera and tape measure and shoot a few pictures and make some measurements for you. I have 3 boards that make up my hatch. Russell

Thanks for the info...

Thanks for the replies, this information is most enlightening. The one piece "door" that I have now is only 1/4" thick and does not fit very well. Without your pics, I would not have known the sides are thinner than the rest of the boards. So, where the sides fit into the drop channels is 1/2" - Correct? Can ya'll take a look at my attempt of a drawing for these boards (using John New's measurements from above - muchas gracias) and let me know if I have the measurements correct? I may end up without boards that are the same 1/2" thickness all around instead of the beveled edges since that may require additional routing work. I can't upload files yet, so here is the link: http://www.ans-vb.com/temp/H27-HatchBoards.pdf Thanks for all the help... LOU

Maybe Johns are 3/4" thick

Mine, which have been replaced, are 1/2" thick. They are also only two pieces instead of three, which I probably wouldn't have done, but it works ok. I took a piece of cheap 1/2" plywood, cut it to the size of my top hatch board, cut out the middle leaving around a 2" border, ripped some strips of pine and made a screen which looks pretty good with a few coats of Cetrol varnish.

Looks good.....

Hi Lou The drawings look good. My only caution would be to check the measurements on your own companionway against mine (which I'm sure you were going to do) just in case there's a slight difference or I messed up my own measurements Cheers John P.S. On the very bottom drawing (in black) the depth marked as ?? shoud be 1/8" (diff. between 5/8" and 1/2") and the other ?? measurement (from the edge inward) should be 3/4"

Mine are 1/2"

Randy wrote: Maybe Johns are 3/4" thick No, mine are 1/2" thick as well; perhaps I was not sufficiently clear. The boards were 5/8" thick, but routed down to 1/2" thickness from the edge of the board to 3/4" in from the edge. You can see it in the second picture, Lou's pictures get it right.

Lexan Hatch Boards

Lou, Have made new boards for my 75 H27. Well not really boards,...your new hatches have to be 1/2 " on the outside to fit in the slide area. I had new hatches made in 1/2" Bronze Lexan, it has an incredible effect, from the inside it is like having a picture window...adds alot of light below, and from the outside it is completely private as the Lexan will appear black.. Any local auto glass dealer can make them up or you can make with a band saw , the lexan is very expensive, but the effect is nice. The Fifth Estate H27 - DYC
