Anyone out there have experience with using a portable hatch air conditioner (such as the Cruisair carry-on)on the Hunter 26? It looks like it could be made to fit, but with the unusual front hatch design on the H26, I'd like to know for sure. I don't know anybody with one that I can borrow to test the fit... Thanks, Michael C.

Got mine 2 years ago

Michael, I have had this unit on my 1996 H26 for two years now. It fits just fine. I improved the hood by installing snaps. This keeps all the rain out. To minimize the number of holes to drill in the deck, I replaced some of the existing window and hatch hinge screws with the male portion of the snap. The ones that have the screw installed already. Worked out great. Get the deflector for this unit. It helps direct the air to the area disired. You won't find the CruisAir to be much use during the day but at night it's great. Cruiseair

We have 99 260 and the Cruiseair works great! Just got back from our third trip to SW Florida and it is the only way to go. I believe the hatch is the same on the 260 and the 26. It is a little cumbersome to lug it onto deck and is much easier with two people. I store the unit behind the stairs and bungee it in when we are sailing from location to location. Mermaid M5 Air Conditioning the way to go!

Hello Michael, I have a Hunter 260 2001 model and installed the Mermaid M5 A/C Unit under the V-berth. The Mermaid M5 went in smoothly. It took about 4 days to install the unit. I thought about the Cruisair through the hatch unit, but it looked like it would be to much trouble to move up and down and also would take up a lot of space inside the boat to store it. I have a Honda EU2000i generator that I plug into my shore power inlet on the boat and can be cool no matter where I anchor. By the way the generator will run all night on one gallon of gas. Go with the installed A/C unit. It is a little more trouble up front, but pays off greatly when your at a dock or anchored out. I will post some pictures later on of the installation. If you have any questions just give me a shout. Sail On! Clay Thaxton Dcthaxton@aol.com

Cruisair

We got our Cruisair three years ago and found that the forward hatch is not a good place for it. It blocks the anchor locker and there are too many things to trip over for it to be a safe location. We open the companionway hatch and set the unit there. We cut plywood to fill in the opening. This arrangement lets cool air flow into the galley and sleeping areas where it is most needed. We usually keep it in place while sailing or lash it down on the sea hood, where it just clears the vang. I think I still have photos if you would like to see them. Ralph C. Regar S/V Shambala
