Hello, I am new to this site, I recently purchased a Cat. 30 after owning many past sailboats, including a Cat. 22, Cat 25, S2 28', Oday 34, etc.
I am in the process of refitting a 1980 mk. 1 Std. rig, & was wondering if anyone has replaced their fixed head & forward portlights with opening type ports. I've looked at the Beckson & Lewmar (pricey) and neither seem to be a perfect fit. I'd like to improve venting, & I've also thought of installing a Nicro solar vent over the head, as i did prEviously with my S2 (worked well). Anyone been there, done that?;)

I replaced mine with Lewmar Atlantic Series opening portlights. I had to enlarge the cutouts but only slightly. Been happy ever since.

Thanks for the reply - I assume U installed the # 2 size Lewmar portlights?
I have been looking at them online. By the way your C 30 looks great -I noticed you have the U shaped setee like mine. Did U replace your table?
Somebody replaced mine with a tiny cocktail table & now I can't use it to form the base for the drop down double bunk for my kids to sleep on.
I was thinking of building a new one out of unfinished butcher block & sealing it w/ marine varnish. Also, did U instal the autopilot on your C 30? I bet that was a job. Cheers, ;)

+1 - & yes the #2 portlights. They are still a little pricey, but they are very nice. I found a few voids in between the cabin liner & deck, so you may want to make up a batch of West with some low density filler (or whatever waterproof filler you like) for filling those voids..it will make the installation nice. I also found that I had to pick up a few different length screws to accommodate the thickness variations (you mount the portlight by screwing into the frame from the inside and sandwiching the deck in the process)..they are metric machine screws, but I found stainless ones in various lengths at my local Ace Hardware.

Here a couple of pics of mine installed..my boat is not nearly as pretty as Neil's..she was put away wet for a lot of years and will take a long time to finish..but the wife and I enjoy sailing her in the meantime. Neil's boat refurb is a masterpiece for others with old C-30's to envy.

Thanks for the detailed response. I'm really enjoying talking to fellow sailors with all this great C 30 info. It's awesome compared to when I had my S 2 that most people have never heard of & they stopped making 20 years ago. It was very well built,but too small. Any deficiencies in the C 30 are more than made up for by the excellent owner's forum & Catalina being so supportive. I have always wanted a C 30 & knew I was going to get one. I think my 1980 was a good compromise, well updated & I only paid 9 k. The only drawback is the tiny 5411 diesel. But my S 2 only had a Yanmar 8 hp, so I'm used to being underpowered. It is after all, a sailboat! Cheers
