I just bought a mac 26s 1994. Im wondering if these boat can have a higher HP (25HP to 50HP) than a 10HP motor it came with? does anyone have one have a 26S with more HP it is recomended? (let me know) Im craving the "need for speed" I live near the Chesapeak bay and I wanna cover more sailing Miles over a weekend.....

motor weight and boat hull design

I've seen 15hp (2 stroke-75 lbs) on the 26s, but brochure says 10hp max. Consider the weight... 10-15hp (4 stroke) is 115 lbs. 40hp Tohatsu/Nissan (2 stroke) is 145 lbs. 30hp Honda (4 stroke) is 155 lbs. 50hp Honda (4 stroke) is 210 lbs. 50hp Suzuki (4 stroke) is 240 lbs. Also, the hull is not built/designed for high speed powering. More speed can probably be attained if you use caution. But an X it will not be!

Displacement -vs- Planing hull

The difference is in the design of hull. Your engine recommendation will easily get you to maximum hull speed in nearly all conditions of current and wind. Once your hull speed is obtained, a larger engine on your 26s cannot make you go faster. The hull being a displacement hull will only push a bigger wake and the the bigger the wake that you create, the more power you will need to get over it, it simply cannot be done. A 26X hull is designed to ride up or "plane out" on top its wake, like a surfer does. The hull design of the two is like apples and oranges, you cannot compare them.

Tohatsu 25hp

I recently bought a 1991 26S that came with a 1999 2 stroke Tohatsu 25hp. It seems to run just fine. Never really checked (via GPS) the max speed I've attained.

25hp

When I bought my Mac25 used, my first boat. It had an Evinrude 25hp 2-stroke on it. Not knowing any better, I used it for about a year, until I found out that it was too heavy for my motor mount. I didn't have any problems with the heavy motor, but like the other folks said, I could never get over the hull speed of 6.8mph. To sum it up, anything over a 10hp is a waste.
