Figure $800-1000

Jim: We are evaluating the same thing. What are we going to do about the vberth mattress. I think that I am going to purchase a piece of latex foam (twin bed size) If I cut it in a diagional this will be just about perfect for the vberth. The price for the foam is about $400. Then we will need someone to cut it and make a cover. From what I have found there are only a few products that are very good. 1) A real inner spring mattress. 2) latex foam 3) memory foam (like temperpedic). (all good products) Standard off the shelf foam is fine for someone with a good back. If you have an old tired back like mine you need better support and I think that latex foam is the deal. The question I have is what is the minimum thickness and what density do we need.

What we did

We replaced the foam mattress on our boat a year ago. It was the best investment we made. I purchased the matresses from www.foamsweetfoam.com. We cut a paper pattern, and he cut the foam to size. We choose a high-density foam over the latex and are very happy with that decision. His prices where very reasonable as well.

Got mine here

Try this URL. They have just about everything. Quick delivery and I cut it myself. I bought the 5850. This is very firm in 3" thickness. If you want softer go to the 5600. Queen size x 3" thick was $178.

Warning

Steve, The proir owner redid my aft cabin mattress. It is real firm but my arms fall asleep when sleeping on them. I have to roll over ever couple of hours. Ok if you sleep on your back. I think Boat US will custom make a mattress to order for the $1000 price. Maybe it is worth the extra money? Thanks, Jim H28

That is part of the problem.

Jim: That is part of the problem with regular foam. What we need to know is what weight/density of foam is going to be comfortable, provide adequate support, not cause your arms to go to sleep while you are sleeping etc. One of the differences is that there is NO box spring. We place this on a solid surface which will make a big difference. I had new foam put in our vberth a couple of seasons ago and we are not happy with it. The wife complains, the dog complains (but still sleeps there) and I complain to all the above and you too. I is a good investment if it is done correctly so I want to do it only once (if possible). Using traditional foam is NOT one of our options. The exception to this would be to use a denser foam on the bottom and a softer foam on top.

high-density foam

I concur with Paul. high-density foam is the best bang for the buck and FoamSweetFoam is a great website and company to deal with. I sleep on a Latex mattress. Nothing beats it, but high-density foam is just a notch below latex for comfort. And high-density foam last a long time. Good luck.

Latex

I just installed a large hinged queen-sized fitted Latex mattress from HCM in my 461 forward berth.. It is excellent. Seven and a half inches deep. My wife and our dog also love it. The only drawback is the price - pretty steep.

Jim Davis - What's HCM?

And could you define steep? This is a great thread! LaDonna

Paul - same question

Can you give a rough ballpark on price for your v-berth? And why did you choose high density over latex? LaDonna

Boat US - $725 for a Vberth mattress!

That seems stinking cheap to me! $725 for a real mattress that folds, etc. Any drawbacks to this? LaDonna

What We Did

.. on our Legend 40.5 was to re-stuff the leather salon cushions with higher-density foam (the old ones were soft) and recovered the v-berth, aft cabin and aft cabin back rest. We had an upholstery guy do it who knew enough to use marine-grade materials (anti-mildew) and thread. My wife had him do the bottoms in vinyl and the tops in a heavy acrylic. $1200 for the whole thing. Very satisfied after two years. The cushions are 6 inch high(er) density foam and they are very comfortable. We also looked into a custom mattress but it would have been the same for what we paid for everything. Rick D.

GOOGLE-MEMORY FOAM

Go to the above and look at some of the websites that sell the Thermopedic type memory foam. I purchased a queen size that came with a very nice mattress pad and cut to size. We placed over the existing 4" foam cushions and it makes a great new mattress for about $175.00.

You mean people actually

sleep in V-berths? I thought they were just for junk storage, sails, etc. At home we sleep on a water bed, have for thirty years. But I doubt that's an option on the boat.

Sure you can have a water bed

on any boat. It's just another term for sinking! Brad A. O22

On our 30 (gone now and replaced with a 36 that needs the same thing!) we re-upholstered our v-berth cushions with 5" thick foam. When offered the different frimness options we chose the second firmest foam out of 4 densities. I don't know what the specs where for it but it turned out fine. With this foam along with our bedding we slept very well. Not as good as home, but not bad, either. For me, I think that what is needed is firmness with some softness right under you when you sleep. On my 25 I used the factory cushions with an egg-crate foam pad. That was pretty good too.

Last year we got HCM . .

4 inch inner spring mattresse's for the aft cabin and the V berth. The HCM rep came out to the boat and took all the measurements. 3 weeks later the mattresses were delivered to the marina. The fold for easy in and out of the boat. Cost us about 2200.00 for our 91 legend 37. We love them. Chris s/v Tidesong

Talalay Latex FoamSweetFoam

We replaced the three 4" cushions that was our our aft cabin berth for 5 years with a Talalay Latex medium firm (35 IDL) one-piece mattress. It was a queen size (80 X 60) 6" thick pad that FoamSweetFoam cut and bonded together to form a trapezoid (90 bottom, 70 top, and 60.82 sides) mattress. They also provided a custom quilted damask pillow top case made with anti-microbial fabric. Final thickness of the mattress was 7 1/2". $920 including shipping and tax AND my wife and I love it! (we don't have a dog but I'm sure he/she would too). Moving it around to get to the lockers under it is very easy. It is like a giant slinky. Latex is supposed to last 20 years.

Wait a minute....

Ok, you guys are telling me that it costs $1k for just the v-berth cushions? Or are you guys telling me it's $1K for all the cushions?

J

Jim A

It's for a boat ain't it

To have a custom mattres made for a v-berth that is what it costs. To just replace the foam is a lot cheaper. Maybe $300?
