A while ago I wrote the following: My Harken roller furler rotates, but there is about an 1/8 of the turn where it seems to bind up and go "clunk" on every rotation. I have not furled up the sail yet because of this. I just take the sail down at the end of the day. It is a H23 and the standing rigging is tight, so I can not imagine the headstay is loose. Now I found the problem and I am posting it so others can learn from my mistake. The problem is with the location of the halyard restrainer that I mounted this spring before launch. To solve the halyard wrap problem I had last summer, I put a halyard restrainer on the mast. But I put it too close to the location where the roller furling extrusion attaches at the mast. Now when you turn the extrusion, a protion of the turn brings the widest part of the extrusion into contact with the halyard restrainer block on the mast. The solution will be to move the block down further on the mast. Will I have to re-cut my head sail? I will let you all know. Another lesson for those of you who have found water in the "battery" area of the H23. I was getting about a gallon after every sail, but none while it was sitting in the slip. The problem was loose nuts on the printles. Water was coming in through the rudder attachment nuts. I tightened them up and no more water. I am assuming that the transom of H23 is not water logged. I will check this out soon. If it is, I will post that information also. Good Sailing Bill Leathen
