Hard Starting Yanmar

I have an 85 28.5 with a 2gm Yanmar that is starting the apparently typical starting issues of an older wiring harness. I have read the archives and actually bought the parts & pieces to install the often mentioned relay. But, I appear to have more wires on my solenoid than are indicated in the pictures & wiring diagrams, so I am asking. Is there any other way to solve this problem? Is the relocation of the starter button an option? Just very concerned about messing this up.

I had this problem with my Yanmar 2GM20F and solved it by adding a 12 vdc relay to solenoid. I've written a number of items about this problem in "Boat Info/Sailboat Knowledge Base" on the SBO site. Take a look at:

I installed the relay 5 years ago and have not had any problems since. Installed it on 4 other boats without any problems since. I hope the attached picture and diagram can help. Good luck

Rich, If your looking for a fool proof (well almost) solution and concerned about wiring you could use a remote start switch. It will also help to confirm if the problem is the harness or something else in the engine. It has two alligator clamps one on each end of a wire with a hand held button switch in the middle. On the one I use for troubleshooting - you just connect the clamps to the starter, large to large nut and small to small nut and then hold the switch in your fist and press the button with your thumb. It bypasses the wiring harness and is done from the engine (starter and solenoid). Harbor Freight (I have no connect with them – just the one I found on google) has them for $11. Here is a link. Thanks for the suggestions. My biggest concern is I have 4 red wires connected to the solenoid, 2 appear to be part of the original harness, the other two I'm not sure as I'm not the original owner of the boat. I will try a remote starter button to make sure something else isn't going on, but if anyone has recommendations regarding what I've described I'd appreciate the assistance.

Sorry to jump off a little but I cannot find the thread with a recommended starter motor rebuild shop.

Anyone have that info? I'm in the U.S.

Cranked her way too much before realizing I lost my prime and I think I sent this old starter over the edge. She is a 79 and served well

Pretty sure they don't rebuild starters, your going to have to buy one new. Ebay has them and they are reasonably priced. Just search for yanmar 2gm starter. Shouldnt be more then $100.

take it to an auto electric shop and have it rebuilt if it is repairable

Appreciate the advice... Someone directed me to john Deere saying they have many yanmar equivalents.

Worth a try since there is a dealer right in town. Otherwise I'm going to have to do the eBay hunt.
