I have trouble hearing. Really a problem when my engine is running and I use my hand held to talk to a dockmaster about a slip assignment. I bought a handheld with a record and repeat feature that helps if I can remember the right buttons to push to get the repeat function to work. In a related issue, I just found an app for cell phones that converts speech to text in real time. Works great if you are hard of hearing and I wanted to share this with the rest of my fellow aging sailors. Once set up on your cell you will see your phone conversation as if it is a text message with both sides displayed in print. The text is AI generated from speech and has only a slight delay to process. Hardly noticeable. It is free to download with no monthly charges either. The app is called OLELO. Hope this helps others.

Thanks, my wife is getting less reliable with relaying information. We do a lot of conversing when directions are repeated, sometimes I get a little terse in my remarks. I hope that I don’t let out the reality that she could be replaced by an app.

Sounds like a gift too good to be true.

While the app is available it has a special use.

Now if someone would develop an app that would instantly form into text what my wife and I discuss. Sometimes she say my hearing is going bad. I say it is what she is saying that I’m not understanding.

“Honey, did you just say I need a bigger boat? “

“NO!”

Confusing times.

Not sure if you already have them, but I've found a newer set of digital hearing aids helps a lot with speech recognition issues. Mine have multiple programs for different situations. I have one for conversation in noise that helps a lot in restaurants and on the boat when the engine's running. An added plus is that my phone automatically switches to them, so if we want to communicate when anchoring, for instance, all my wife has to do is call me from the wheel when I'm up at the anchor and we can carry on a conversation at a normal level.

If you think you are hard of hearing, you no doubt are hard of hearing. The Olelo app is paid for by the government and you only need to self identify (while downloading the app) as hard of hearing to obtain this fine free service.

I have not heard the sound of silence since I served onboard an aircraft carrier. My rack was directly below the flight deck, and right next to the cat track. For those who don’t know that means there was only 1 inch of steel between me and the jet exhaust When the planes launched. The ringing is really loud and some sounds are not that audible any more.

I have used text to speech apps before when an accident left me unable to speak for a few months, but that is a completely different story… kinda funny how people reacted tho…
