Hard dodger/sprayhood?

Anybody ever seen a hard dodger (sprayhood for the UK) on a Vega?
Any particular advice on fitting one?
I am vaguely considering it after learning of the money needed for a
new custom-made dodger (our old one is such a pain to get in the
companionway and has flimsy aluminum frame). My skills are a lot
better in building hard things than canvas work, and the added
strength could be a nice added benefit.

As I remember, after his very extensive cruise in a Vega, much of it in blue water (see his book, Log of the Mahina), John Neale was sure a hard dodger was the way to go.

For myself, I do coastal cruising, and like dropping the dodger when conditions warrant.

Hi Cedric

Can be done, we have a Vega in the UK called Rupert (Sailed across The
Atlantic "Out of teh Blue" by Anne Miller). She sold Rupert and teh new
owner put a hard doghouse on top. Looks very ugly in my opinion!

Looked at the pictures of the hard doghouse and agree it does not look nearly as good as the canvas dodger/sprayhood.
I replaced my dodger two or three years ago with one custom made by Diana Webb. Diana does an excellent job and it fit perfectly as she sent it. Don't recall the cost, but for me it was well worth it. I've had it mounted and up since original installation, even now that it's in the teens with snow here in New York, and still looks like new.
Diana is Club Secretary for the UK Vega group and can be reached trough them or by direct e-mail at diana@...

Maluhia, V3049, now has a hard dodger. Looks like very good
protection. A lot of windage though. I'll walk over tonight or
tomorrow AM and take some pictures. If I run into Jim Moore I'll ask
him about the construction. Maybe I can get a how-to article out of him.
