Standard Horizon, West Marine etc.

Rick: There are many good inexpensive handheld VHF's today. Standard Horizon, West Marine etc. They are all pretty good. You just need to remember that the cheap ones are not worth repairing. Three years and the battery is usually junk on even the good ones. There are some outfits that will repack the battery pack much cheaper than the OEM batteries.

What's wrong with this one?.....

I bought it and love it. It's 5 watts just like the high dollar ones and comes with all the extras for about $50 bucks. Very nice folks who sell it too. No problem with the battery.....It comes with a rechargeable, and when it goes out, just use double A's. I had an expensive Apelco and the battery died and the replacement was as much as a new unit????????????

Battery Powered Backup

If that is your primary radio, then you should have a backup with the capability of shifting to a battery pack when the initial charge runs out. I bought one specifically for that reason and looked for that option. ICOM makes them and are powered by a backup pack that holds 6 AAA batteries. I went over a week when it was only used as a secondary radio. Backup came in handy.
