I am looking for recommendations for a handhled GPS to be used as a back-up for my built in RayMarine unit. I'm looking dor something that has the following features:
1. color charts;
2. accepts external antenna, as i will be using this unit under a Bimini or in the cabin as an achor drag alarm;
3 has good battery life;
4 can be used on land for hiking or driving.

I like the "GPSMAP® 76CS" easy to use, though I have never used external charts with it

I have the same one, GPSMAP 76CS works just fine, has color charts, external antenna hook up (never used it) accepts topo maps for hiking and it does have a rather amazing battery life. I don't like the small screen though. I have used it for at least 5 years now but it has been discontinued though that has no impact on me.

Second that. Several years ago I got a great deal on the 76C from here:

Running Bluecharts on it. No problems with unit or reception sans ext. ant. anywhere on/in boat...

Does everything we want. PC connection allows chart management & easy route building. Garmin has discontinued Blue Charts support, which will eventually for e moving to a new unit.

Another vote for the Garmin 76C. I have had it for 5 years and works great. I got a bicycle mount that fits well on the binacle rail at the helm. Also have a Garmin 441 at the nav station and a Garmin 72 in the ditchbag.
Garmin makes the best in my opinion.
