There has been a good bit of posting in the past on hand starting the yanmars. After all, Yanmar does include a hand crank, surely its good for something! anyway, I have posted a hand crank design on the photo forum that does allow me to hand crank the 2gm. I hope I never have to depend on it but in the meantime, I feel better offshore. The photo forum shows a hole bored in the engine box. At the location shown, this hole, is practically always invisible since the ladder rung hides it. The biggest problem is finding a place to store the big crank.

Did you consider

Removing the ladder, drilling the access hole, and making the crank shaft a little shorter? When hand cranking, you wouldn't have the crank sticking through the ladder rungs. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

Ken Palmer Response

The important thing is to get the throw of the crank out in the open area at the foot of the companionway. The photo looking down on the crank shows that the the handle must clear the head partition so the ladder itself is not the governing obstacle. The long crank does take some planning to store.

Another Solution

On a three cylinder Yanmar you can cut the compression release rod right behind the first cylinder release. Then when you crank the engine you engage only the first cylinder which will fire up, although rough, and then engage the othere two.
