Hand starting a yanmar 1gm

I would like to hand start my 1gm. I have the crank handle but on the engine shaft there is no part for the crank handle to connect too. The little pin in the engine shaft is missing. Does anyone have any ideas on where to get a pin or an idea to use something different in the hole? I don't have an idea.

I have a volvo 2002 - and I cannot imagine hand starting it.

Is is technically or physically possible for a human to spin a diesel fast enough for it to start ???

We've tried to hand-start our Yanmar 3GM. Ha! Even opening all the cylinders but one, with the alternator belt loose, it's a no-go. I guess we keep the handle as a prayer token.

The technique is to use the flywheel to help.. Put the transmission into neutral, open all of the decompression levers and spin the engine as fast as you can (6-10 revs with lots of umph) then engage one lever while still cranking with maximum force, It should fire on one cylinder ... then get the handle out of the way and engage the other levers as the engine pops over.. I have seen it done on a 1 GM and I've heard tales of a 3 GM being sussfully started that way. It can hurt you (break bones) if the handle does not have a one way release.

I have heard that the larger Yanmars are very difficult to hand crank. I have seen a 1gm hand cranked. I am just missing a piece on the flywheel that the hand crank attaches too. It is like a little pin that goes through the shaft. I have looked all over for something to work but I can't find it. I was thinking I might find it on this website.

you may find one at Masty marine or Dons salvage they are both close to you assuming you are in tampa/clearwater area....

Symmes, The Yanmar part # is 124070-14760. It should be held in place in the end of the camshaft by a little bolt that presses on a flat in the center of the pin.. That bolt is part # 26450-050102.. Commonly available metric M5 X 10.. Good luck with the hunt..

I'll look at mine next time I'm at the boat. I have hand-started mine, and it's not that hard.

I agree, have hand started a 3GM years ago (over 25) without an issue and don't remember it being that hard. Handle releases itself without any issues. Claude's description is how I remember it to be but started cranking while one decompression lever was locked in then after started engaged the remaining two cylinders.
