I need to replace my main and jib halyards but don't necessarily want to buy larger rope than I need. Is there a size that is specified by Catalina? I've seen different sizes on boats around the marina. Mine are currently 3/8".

Catalina Associations

Doug, While you don't say what size boat you have, almost all Catalina Models have their own associations, which usually have the boat manuals posted with the specified sizes for running and standing rigging. Most associations are www.c (or Catalina) boat size.org I think C30 went to Catalina30.com recently. Stu

Halyard size

Doug, you didn't say how large your boat is, but the standard size for a Cat 27 is 3/8.

5/16 recommended

I have a 1974 Catalina 27. The original parts catalogue calls for wire/braided 5/16 dacron on the main and jib. The spinnaker halyard calls for 3/8 dacron. I use Sta Set polyester 5/16 on the main and jib. They handle well, even single-handing from the cockpit. Since I don't use a spinnaker, I also have 5/16 in the spinnaker block as an extra utility line. This WM page gives a good recommendation for the various ropes.
