On a 1972 Cat 27,do the the masthead sheaves need to be changed if I replace the wire and rope halyard with an all rope halyard ? Can you give me the proper technique to make the change ? thank you

Don't need to change 'em

I just did this last year on my 73 C27 & didn't need to change the sheaves. I used 5/16" yacht braid.You'll have to send someone to the masthead to guide them through but you shouldn't have a problem. LaDonna

Rope a dope

Yes they need to be replaced. The diamiter of the rope is larger than the wire. The sheves can be bought from Catalina direct at www.catalinadirect.com for about 13$. I just changed mine and replaced a cracked mast head as well. The sheves are held on with two pins and cotter keys. I had my mast down and it made all the work easy. Mast up should be a chalenge as you would need one line to haul someone up with and a second as a safty line. If you drop the mast you can replace all the pld wiring and lights at the same time. I did and also did the rigging at the same time.
