Halyard tangles

I have an Islander 30 . The mast has steps. The halyards all run on the outside of the mast and frequently get tangled on the steps, particularly in bumpy conditions. My Halyards are led back to the cockpit because I sail single handed much of the time. This simply compounds the problem since, despite many years of sailing experience, I can't be on deck and on the cockpit at the same time! Can anyone advise me about simple or not so simple ways to solve the problem without removing the steps! Thank you.

Islander/Wayfairer 30 sail number 25 Perryville,Md.
Place a fairlead on a lanyard attached to the shrouds and pull the halyard clear of the steps.

Run a small line (1/8 in.) tightly from the top to the bottom of the mast, on each side of the mast, tied to outside edge of each step on that side to prevent halyards, sails, or anything else, from wrapping around any step.

Have fun
