Sounds like an override situation, when using sailboat winchs you have to ensure the like feeds the drum at the bottom of the winch. and that it does not ride over exiting wraps as you crank. many times the winch can be mounted at a slight angle away from the direction of pull to help. If a winch is mounte on the mast or deck an angled block is put under it to tilt it, and raise it a bit so the line will feed the winch at botton of the hub. hope thats clear. Upwind
If I'm not straight upwind, my slugs bind up. I have a one about two thirds up thats a real bitch if there isn't a decent breeze. Thats becouse I was a dumbass and tried to lubricate the track without understanding what was happening. I hope its this simple for you. I really do.
