I need to replace the halyards on my 1984 C-30. I note that the parts list for the Catalina 30 has wire halyards with rope tails. However, the current halyards are only rope. Should I replace the halyards with wire/rope combinations? Does anybody have wire/rope halyards? Do the pulleys at the top of the mast work with rope or wire? Thanks

I have some

I have the rope wire halyards that I took off my Sun 27. They are in good shape. I won't be able to measure them for about a month when I get home. The sheaves will need to be changed if you go to rope and you will have to go internal with the halyards. If you want to discuss further, e-mail me at j_gilmour@hotmail.com use subject Sun 27 hal.

No Worry

The Sheaves will be fine. The older boats that had rope/wire also have sheaves that are designed to handle both wire and rope. The halyard was 5/32 wire spliced to 3/8 rope. A good low stretch 3/8 line will work just fine. Catalina uses a parallel core for halyard on the new boats. New England Sta-Set X (I think) is a good choice for halyards. If you have a few extra $$ you can use 8mm or 5/16" Spectra or Vectran. Somewhere along the line Catalina went to all rope halyards. The sheaves in those masts will not be happy with wire halyards. No need to run the halyards internal unless you want to. External rope halyards work just fine.

meat hooks

Try to stay with all rope. When halyards are split between wire and rope, the wire will develop "meat hooks" after a while. These are called meat hooks because they hook the meat of your hand quite easily. Good luck. CM
