This is my first sailboat. The day after I brought it home and moored it on the lake, a neighbor (who is a good friend) complained about the Halyard making noise all night as it slapped around inside the mast (the Jib Sheet does the same thing), although my other neighbor said he loves the sound. So, other than tightening these sheets as much as possible, is there a way to reduce the sound as the boat rocks back and forth?

Attach a bungie cord and pull it away to another fixed position, perhaps a shroud.

Chris...
You may want to clarify your post/question.
I presume you're talking about main and jib halyards, not sheets, and, if so, you may want to emphasize the halyards run INSIDE the mast.
Have fun,
Paul

Thank you Paul! Yes, these are halyards and they are indeed inside the mast, which is where they are generating the noise.

Take the halyards and lay them over the spreaders and then back down to the cleat. Much easier than screwing around with bungee cords.

If you keep enough tension on them they will hopefully not bang inside the mast.

Chris,
Not sure if your 18.5 has any wires for lights or the VHF inside the mast. That's what slaps on my boat.

Dave,

Your suggestion saved the day! I put tension on the cable running up to the mast light, and the noise stopped. Better still, I did it while the neighbors were there, and they agreed there is now no issue.

Thanks!!

Chris
