I'm planning on replacing the halyards on my 1981 H-30. The existing lines are old and I can"t figure out if they're 1/2", 5/8" or some other size.

Any info you might have out there would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Replace with 3/8" low stretch rope such as Samson XLS Extra T. That is what I recently replaced on my 31.

Contact Hunter and see if they still have the specs.

I think that 1/2" is way to big, the max I would go would be 7/16" for the main/jib halyard. Have you checked out the specs on this site. They have good prices and guarantee the products too.

I had 1/2" for the main halyard when I bought my boat three years ago. It was very old and could have been original.

I replaced with a mid-grade low stretch 3/8".

Probably today's for 3/8" lines, the strength/stretch will be better (or at least equal) to 1/2" back in the late 1970's when Hunter would have written the rigging specification.

I do have the Hunter rigging spec sheet for my 1980 H36. But its on my boat.

So many skippers make the mistake of buying too large a diameter line for their halyards then wind up having trouble hoisting sails. Downsizing to smaller low stretch line is the way to go. Avoid using double braid Dacron line for your halyards. It is not low stretch enough to be a good choice. High tech lines do cost more but by downsizing the cost difference is minimal but the performance is much greater.
