Hi. I have a 1977 Catalina 30 tall rig. Just got it last year and have really enjoyed it. I plan on unstepping the mast and replacing the main and genoa halyards. I see that the main halyard is a larger diameter than the genoa halyard. Did catalina use a standard halyard size and sheeve size for each halyard and if so, what is it? Is there a good way to measure the diameter of these halyards. With so many different line suppliers and types of coverings on these lines, how does one know which to use and what diameter? Im sure there has been a lot of changes in rigging of Catalinas since 1977. So, if you have experience with thsi subject I would like any advice and information. Thanks

Vintage Halyards

The original halyards were wire/rope. The sheaves will handle up to 1/2 in diameter line. With the choices available today, I'd suggest going with all rope. 7/16 double braid is the most economical choice. If you want to stay with wire/rope halyards, find a good rigger that will make the halyards up to *exactly* the right length. Wire is great for external halyards, Jib halyards especially if the halyard winch is on the mast. The end of the wire should never get to the winch. At maximum hoist and tension the tail off the wire should be 3-6 inches above the winch. For main halyards and halyards lead aft I like parallel core dacron as a lower stretch upgrade, you can use a size smaller. If you've been nice and Santa in a good mood, treat your boat to spectra or vectran halyards.

Stu and Moody, thanks for the advice and information. The boat has rope halyards. I will replace the main sheeve and the main halyard. Again, thanks for the information. Regards
