"Hallway" leak?

Lisa Woodburn

Hi, I'm sure this has been addressed before - and am afraid that the answer will be the keel bolts or keel housing..... Has anyone had this problem, and what was the culprit of the leak? I'm calling my sailboat shop tomorrow to fix this, but could use some experienced suggestions to save some labor time and get a consensus of what I should expect/budget to have to have fixed, since I will not drop a 500+ lb keel myself. Thanks to all in advance for the experienced advice (and please don't make fun of me for not dropping the keel my-inexperienced-self and risking life & limb :) I had my 29+ yr old Cat 22 out for a 3 day weekend, and the first night noticed about a foot long wet spot in the middle of the "hallway". The week before when we anchored out, it was totally dry, no problems, and -no - it did not rain into my boat last week, nor did I run aground or anything before this occurred :) Anyway, this weekend, all the bilges were basically dry (including the keel bolt locker), but the middle of the boat between the keel housing and the starboard storage lockers below was becoming damper & damper. We threw towels on it, and they soaked it up quick.... We stayed in the water 3 days, sailed in 20+ knot winds, and the leak still leaked, but [thank god!] it didn't get any worse when we anchored out the second night & stayed to socialize most of the third day. Any ideas as to what this could be from? Thanks again! Lis "Cozin"

Check under the V-berth

Lisa: Check under the V-berth, on some of the older C22's there are 2 thruhulls that were for the old style direct discharge marine head. When I purchased my 1973 C22 # 1909, 9 years ago it still had the head in it. The first thing I did was replace it with a porta potti, and capped off the intake and discharge thruhulls. If you have the remnants of these thruhulls and they leak the water would come out through one of two holes near the floor on the front bulkhead of the V-berth. If the leak is on the upper end of the pipe and valve to these thruhulls which is located above the waterline It will only leak while underway. Barry Broyles
