hey guys and gals, spent the whole day on the boat today, it was a productive day, did the windows on the port side of the boat and started bringing some cushions in the boat, installed some mouldings on the settee, need to buy more to finish the job.

hard to believe new windows make that much of a difference, tomorrow I'll be finishing the Plexiglass hatch boards, almost done, just need to let the "adhesive" do it's thing and trim off the excess, pics to come tomorrow for that project

If the stanchion bases are stainless steel, they can be polished. If you have a bench grinder, put a polishing wheel on it and get metal polishing compounds. You might want to start with brushing them a brass detail brush (looks like a big toothbrush) and then some wet/dry sand paper and then the polishing wheel. The pitting might not completely disappear, but they will be shiny pits.

Painting will become an endless maintenance issue. It will scratch and flake off and end up looking worse.

thanks for the quick response, the problem is they are not stainless, they seem to be brass or bronze, not sure which one, all I know is they are turning green and don't look good

They shouldn't be brass, probably chrome plated bronze. There isn't a good solution. Bronze will naturally develop a patina that will need constant polishing to keep it bright and shiny.

It may be possible to have them replated. Or, just polish them and clean them up a bit knowing the plating will continue to wear away and bright and shiny they won't be.

Small world. Our previous boat was built in Ontario. It had nice looking chromed bronze stanchion bases and pulpit bases like yours. If you clean them up totally - remove all sealant and dirt - there are re-chroming shops that can buff 'em up and re-apply the multistep process of new chrome.
I have had this done before. The result, bringing it back to new again, is eye popping. :)
Check around for shops that do this work for car restorations and hot rods. That's always worked for us....

I’ve been looking at chrome plating and WOW is it ever expensive, it will be cheaper to just replace the fittings, I looked into powder coating, didn’t get a quote yet but it starts at 150$ (base price) at 150$ I can get 10 stainless fittings before tax, tomorrow I’m going back to work on the boat and will get the other windows done and a few other projects

well I'm back from working on the boat, finished the windows on the other side, started oiling the bulkheads and cleaning the inside, took the opportunity to bring the rest of the cushions on board, just have the quarter berth cushion to bring in because I have a leak to trace.

was bored this evening so I went back to the boat, I installed both doors and tried out my led strip lights, I can say that I'm happy with the results, tomorrow I'll probably install the bilge pumps through hull.

Oh look at all the pretty colors. It is like a night in the late 1960's.
I think my wife sold my lava lamp.

Things are moving along nicely, tomorrow I’m planning on installing the stanchion bases, I think it will help seal the leaks, at least I hope it will help

if the time permits I’ll start grinding the keel joint to fair it and then paint the hull, at least the first coat, gonna be a long and busy day tomorrow

so I spent the day on the boat, found a major source of water intrusion, the PO removed the stanchion bases and just applied some silicone in the holes, I literally just pushed the silicone through, tried to install some stanchion bases, only got one almost done, but I can't reach 2 of the screws, gonna have to figure that one out next time I'm on the boat, but at least I filled most of the holes with some six10.
I also took a look at the stanchions themselves, I'm gonna have to replace a few as some are bent at the base.
cleaned out one locker got it ready for paint, next time I'll paint it, gonna be tough to fit in there, I need to loose weight lol.

didn't have time to look at the keel joint today
