Howdy all. I'm due for a service of my stuffing box and I'm going to order the GFO dripless stuff. I'm going to do this while the boat's in the water so I'd like to have the stuff on hand when I pull the nut. Problem is, I don't know the packing size to order it first. I can pull the nut to measure then put it back on until I get the packing but I'd rather do it all in one shot. Soooo..... Does anybody know with some certainty what the packing width is for a '85 H40? p.s. - on my last visit to the dentist I asked if they had any dental picks that they didn't want anymore (to dig out the old packing.) They brought out a box of nearly 100 of 'em! Lessee, West sells 'em for about $6 a pop, hmmmm.

All you have to do is measure the distance between the inside of the collar and the shaft. That is the size packing you will need. You will probably need at least three rings of packing cut at angles of 45 degrees and placed 120 degrees apart.

Thanks, I 've got the routine down,

I'm just trying to keep the splashing around to one session. I'll just pull it this weekend for a look see. To hot and stormy to sail now anyway, dang it...

The bronze stuffing box on our P42 takes...

3/16 inch thick material. Just a suggestion, although it can be done while the boat is in the water, you might consider just tightening the box a couple of flats to slow the leak until the next time you haul the boat. Terry
