Does anyone know the external diameter of the stern tube on the H37-cutter? I would like to order a PSS Dripless Shaft Seal. I know that the shaft is 1-inch. And I see some sizes for other boat models in the Forum Archives, 1 and 1/4 for example. It would save me cleaning off one foot of snow and crawling into a 20 degree hole!

Maybe 2"??

Ed, I replaced mine last year and I think it was 2". But that was a year ago and I wouldn't want to bet the ranch on it. Since I took my old one to the boatyard I didn't have to measure it, just match it. Gene Gruender Rainbow Chaser

Gentlemen, thank you.

Thanks for your responses. Sailors in the South normally could not understand why I can't just go measure it. But now that it's snowing in Georgia and South Carolina more will have an appreciation.

Stern tube info

I put a PSS shaft seal on my 33 last year. It is of about the same vintage as your 37C and has a 1" prop shaft. The outside diameter of the inside portion of my stern tube is 1 1/2". They sent me PSS part number 01-100-112. (For 1" to 1 1/2" shaft diameter.) The seal is great. Do it! Word of caution! Hunter used very long bolts to pull and hold the tube into position. When first fitted the rubber bellows of the PSS rubbed on the bolt stubs and would have chafed through quickly. I had to cut them down with an air operated cut-off grinder, the only tool I could fit in there. Check the installation carefuly for chafe.
