What have you folks done about staysail sheeting? Do you still have the original setup or have you modified it? This past season I just cleated the sheet off at the staysail boom. I use it so infrequently because of the new and larger yankee. When I do sail with the staysail I just go forward and adjust. My original path was forward under the staysail boom to a turning block and over to the toerail. Then back to the aftmost starboard cleat through a series of blocks on the toerail. While in Sarasota last week I spied an H37C at Marina Jack's. That owner had moved his mainsheet into the cockpit as I have. He then moved the turning block forward of the mast and, with the same deck organizer, ran his staysail sheet back to the port cabin winch. Pretty slick.

My staysail still has the original sheet configuration. Mine (1981) goes to the port side. I still use the staysail, and see no need to change the sheeting. I can adjust it from the back of the cockpit, and with its 3 to 1 tackle, I have not needed to use a winch with the sheet.

My wife and I love our staysail. We , many times, use the main and staysail only and don't use the headsail. They are both self tacking and we can go 5-6 knots most of the time without tacking a headsail. It makes for an easier time on the water and more relaxing. Much more fun than fooling with pulling the headsail over when we turn the boat.

I have an 84 37c. windseeker. the controls for the staysail are run back on the port side to a winch on the cabin top benind the aft cabin hatch. I have a roller furller on the staysail also which makes it very easy and you find yourself using it more often than you would otherwise. the controll lines run thru the coaming ahead of the hatch and across the hatch to the winch. This routing means it is difficult, no not possible to open the hatch when the sail is in use. finally i get to submit some info to someone that may be of use! Ed Allen

The staysail running rigging on Good News has the sheet run through turning blocks to the port side, along the rail to a clamp cleat at the cockpit. The traveler sheet runs on top around the mast to a clamp cleat on top of the cabin.I have never had to use a winch with either, though I can reach them. I use the staysail boom, and the previous owner had three options for sails, including one heavy-weather sail with 3 reefs in place. A yard manager suggested that the leading edge of the boom should be lower to the deck, lowering the entire sail, but I like it the way I found it, on a penant about 18 inches up which gives me better visibility. As discussed before, in strong wind (above 20 knots?) the boat sails very well on a reefed main and staysail, no jib/Yankee, which makes it self-tacking and easy to control because it is balanced. The only problems are that in very light air, if the sail flops it tends to rub against the radar dome (a small patch repair is pending), and the staysail boom is long enough that it can bang against the mast and mash fingers if we are not careful when raising/lowering the sail in heavy weather. Three to one. . .
So far it looks like three of you are rigged as mine was except port instead of starboard. Most that I have seen are on port. Do not know if starboard was factory on a '79 or a previous owner was right-handed.
Ed Allen's must be like the one I described, everything on the cabin roof. Would love to see pictures of your staysail furler and how it is rigged Ed.
