I am putting back together the stay sail boom and since I did not take it apart, I am having to play detective.

I had labeled the line so I know it is the right one. See the picture I enclosed and let me know if this is correct. Looking at the line, I can see what part was out in the weather and what part was in the boom. The wire seems too long but it all seems to fit together O.K.

Also I cannot figure out where does the outhaul line attaches to after coming out of the boom on the sheave. I see two small holes under the boom. Could there be a small cleat missing. Otherwise, where does the end of the line goes to??.
Thanks for your help

Jose,

On my Stay sail boom the line comes out sheave then thru a block where it is tied off on a cleat at the innerstay end of the boom.

Jose,

And yes those two small holes are where my 4" cleat is for tying the outhaul to.

I checked on the main boom. I do have a 4" cleat there for the outhaul line. The holes are 1 1/4 apart. The stay sail boom has the holes at 1 1/4 also but no cleat. I will be hunting for one this week end. Thanks for your help.

Your pictures are confusing to many maybe because the blocks are on the wrong end. The forward end on the stay should be attached with a wire pendant to a deck fitting. The boat originally had a long topping lift which is probably that long wire. Or maybe that wire is supposed to be in the boom as it also looks like the outhaul. Which is secured with a line on the forward bottom to a small cleat.

The sheet originally ran forward from the blocks under the boom to a deck block and over to a toerail block. On my '79 to starboard and the reason for an additional cleat at the back. Another early mod was to eliminate that. I run the sheet to a mast base block, back to a deck organizer and then to the port cabin winch and cleat. For a topping lift I have a short line from the whisker pole ring.

Hold up, Ed! You're losing me! I was happy to see Jose's question, which would have answered my question as well. You refer to pictures, but I only see one photo attached to Jose's post. Unlike Jose, who inherited a disassembled system, I have no one to thank but myself for disassembling the booms without taking hundreds of photos to show how everything went back together. I removed both booms to clean and paint them. The aluminum castings on each end of the boom sections on my '82 37C were made by Kenyon. At several locations, I had to drill out and tap the threads to the next larger thread size as the fasteners had come loose and chewed up the threaded holes. Do you (or anyone out there) have a diagram showing the internal and external rigging for these booms as originally intended? Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks!

In the attached picture:

D is the fitting that goes into the boom at the bow end

A is the block that is inside the boom at the bow end

B is the block that has the outhaul attached to it at the stern end. B is free to move inside the boom

C is a line that exits over a sheave located in D

At the aft and of the boom the stainless steel outhaul exits over a sheave in the fitting that goes into that end of the boom.

Hope this helps. When I rebuilt my boom I replaced the internal blocks with better quality that are stronger and have less friction.

Thanks John, exactly what we needed. I never had mine apart so could not describe the internals. So what we were seeing in Jose's picture were the blocks for the outhaul, not the sheet. Mine is exactly like John's pictures except the sheet goes out the bottom block and back to the port winch on the cabin top.

Boom outhauls

Thanks JohnB.
Exactly what I needed. The only thing that threw me is the fact that the wire portion of the system is way long. It puts the blocks almost at the end of the boom. But they are both the same set up on both booms. The outhauls lines are 3/8 and the reefing lines on the main boom are smaller to fit through the boom end fitting so I ordered 5/16 line for that.

Now, to secure the blocks to the bail bolt going through the boom, I only need a flashlight, a wire snake, a helper and a six pack of Black & Tan.

Cheers

Jose

JohnB, Let me add my thanks to the above. A picture is worth many words. Now I know how all that is supposed to go together! -Greg in Ventura

Jose, when you replace the outhaul line itself, consider replacing that 7x7 wire rope as well. And be sure to include a stainless-steel thimble in the loop where the wire fastens to the moving block. In the pic you show, there isn't one. This fatigues the wire and accelerates a failure. 7x7 wire is especially prone to splintering and eventually weakening and breaking!

BTW-- I think the wire rope part of this tackle is 'way long' to allow one to let the staysail, which is usually loose-footed, to fly free from the boom end-- i.e., the outhaul becomes a kind of jibsheet for the sail while the sheetline controls only the boom. Anyone with a staysail on a traveler will know the potential benefits of letting the sail have more free rein in downwind or off-the-wind situations.

On the H37C, the staysail foot has a bolt rope that slips into the track on the staysail boom - no way to let the staysail 'fly free'. Probably possible to use a loose-footed staysail, if it was cut that way though...but not with the bolt rope on the foot.

I think it depends on who rigged the boat. The ones the were rigged in the California delta are loose footed on a boom.

Staysail boom

I just installed the new outhaul line and also worked on the gooseneck since it had 1/2 of empty space between the two fittings. I found that two stainless fender washers and one nylon washer per side fitted perfectly and took all the slop out of it.
Now it's all tight again. Life is good.
Thank you all.

Without even opening the thread I knew almost verbatim what Blaise' response would be. :)

Why does anyone want a staysail?
I hated the staysail for a variety of reasons, so I made my husband take it off the boat. We never did master tacking without the staysail hanging up on the forestay. I also didn't like having to step over the boom to get around the foredeck. We are storing all the parts for when we sell the boat in the future.
