Nice job, Bob! I too have cursed the shackle. My interim solution was to buy one of those fancy (and expensive) anchor connectors, but still have problems with the rope eye to chain connection. I am going to an all chain rode and electric wife - oops, I mean windlass. I considered taking the whole bow assembly off the boat and to a welding shop for modification, but decided I would have to diet seriously to get far enough into the bow section to get at the nuts! Your solution is more elegant and easier. Question: As you have bolted the new plates to the existing structure, isn't there still a possibility of a jam behind your new roller?

FOr the pictures and the excellent solution to the bow roller problem. I have a CQR35 hanging on the original rollers, starboard one. You have to lift it over the plates both directions! And the shank comes back too far because the roller plates are so short. This will solve both problems. Great job! (Picture is the only one I have of Ladylove under sail. It was just given to me by a dockmate.)

Possible Jamming?

Jim, for sure the shackle on the anchor would still jam after the shackle rides over the new roller and enters the space between the two plates on the original installation - if the chain/rode line up that way. We don't plan on an all chain, electric windlass any time in the near future. When pulling the anckor up by hand, the anchor and shackle come back well above the original plates. I planned the position of the new roller just so that would be the case. I think if you install this type of installation, you could position the windlass height and roller position so it would all work. By the way, I was going to leave the original rollers on, but after I got everything put together, the original rollers didn't serve any purpose. So, I took them off. Cheers, Bob

What Size/ Type Anchor
Looks great, what anchor are you putting on it and what type of anchor roller did you use. The reason I ask is I just made an anchor roller for my Bruce 33. Haven't mounted it yet but will soon. Charles S/V Destiny

Anchor & Roller Type
Charles, I have a 35 pound CQR anchor. The roller is a boat trailer, 5 inch, keel roller. Roller cost about $6.00. It's made out of hard, black rubber. The hole for the shaft has a nylon tubular insert as a bearing. It fits a 5/8 inch shaft. Hope this helps. Bob Miller Gusty Getaway
