Trying to find factory info on correct cutless bearing for Hunter 376. My 376 owner's manual says correct size is 1" x 1.375" x 4", but the yard just removed mine and the replacement won't fit. We think it should be 1.25" O.D. but I'd like to verify before I buy ANOTHER bearing and find out its metric or something. Tips?

The yard should be able to mic the old one to get the correct dimensions.

My Approach

Yes. My H376 WAS 1 1/4" x 4" outside dimensions and 1" bore and NO not metric.

The cutlass was a blxxdy nuisance as the metal tube was so thin the bearing sleeve could not be removed without first taking the shaft out and then using a hacksaw and a screwdriver to destroy the original bearing. It also meant hard work removing the coupling from the gearbox end of the shaft etc.

Apart from the time and effort involved the yard's charges would have been considerable - and all for such a simple task and just because the builders couldn't be bothered to use a decent setup - or to save 2 cents?

After the second bearing replacement I took the strut off and had it bored to 1 1/2" diameter so I can now use the standard bearing as fitted to very many boats over the last 50 years.

Now I simply remove the prop, slide an old 1 1/2" bearing on the shaft which I have cut a 1" wide section out of lengthwise - and with just a couple if light taps the old one comes right out.
No need to go inside the boat at all.

See below for photos of my 'tool' and the old bearing recently removed.

Note a 'proper' wall thickness of tube to ensure fit which does not require a press to get it out plus two decent sized holes for shouldered grub screws to locate the bearing. Its called engineering!
BTW - Having reliable propulsion can become a matter of life or death.

I replaced the bearing on my 376 last year. Bought the bearing from Hunter.

The box said it was a Johnson cutless bearing manufactured by Duramax marine. The size designation on the box was "BACK 1 x 1 1/4 x 4 ".

Had the yard do the replacement with their hydraulic machine, it was quick and cheap. They did not have to take anything apart.

Got word back from Hunter Marine and from the yard (who measured the old bearing) and proper O.D. is 1.25". No explanation of why the manual says it is 1.375". Anybody want to buy an unused 1"x1.375x4" composite cutless bearing?

Thanks for the help.
