I also have an H36C, 1980 Hull #36. No boom vang when I bought the boat about two years ago. Whoa!, didn't the boom ride up real high when the main sheet was let out for a beam reach or a following wind. And no real way to control the main sail twist.
I'll take some pictures of my modification/installation today when down at my boat and post tonight. Not necessary to have the mast down. Mine's a soft vang since I've retained the topping lift to keep the boom suspended when the sail isn't up.
This is the time of year for marine flea markets. Good for finding the miscellaneous blocks/fittings if on a budget. The blocks of course need to be in OK condition and strong enough. But for a boom vang system, the amount of line runout through the blocks is very minimal, compared to (say) the mainsheet system and the jib sheets through the fairlead blocks. Hence, (in my opinion) there isn't a good cost-to-benefit ratio to use the latest hi-tech low friction blocks if something simpler will do the job.
