H34 Windward Performance

Can anyone comment on the H34's windward performance in 35-50 knot winds. I'm concerned about leaving an island anchorage in Santa Anna conditions which can arise quite rapidly in the Santa Barbara Channel. Main has two reef points, and 110% foresail can be roller reefed about 4 feet.

Handles it well!

Hi Randy! I sail my 34 in San Francisco Bay with frequent 30+ knot winds. I usually go with a 2nd reef and if needed, I reef the roller 110 jib to 80%. Windward performance seems fine (I have the aftermarket wing on my deep keel & I think that helps too). When it really blows I douse the main and fly the jib only...but the windward performance suffers cause the boat is out of balance. Was recently offshore in near gale conditions: 35+ knots and 12 ft seas. The boat did fine...but I sure got soaked! The boat is alittle sensitive in following seas...it wants to broach...so it's important to keep the transom aimed at those breakers! The 34 can handle these conditions well...good luck in your cruising the Channel Islands. The previous owner of my 34 took frequent trips to those Islands from San Francisco! JoeO

Having been at the Channel Islands during Santa Anna Winds it can get very scary. Most normaly protected ancorages will turn into a lee shore very quickly with breaking waves. Once out from your anchorage its 20 miles back to the mainland with 40-60 knot wind on the nose. If we get caught we go around the island to anchor on the "new"lee side instead of trying for the harbor. Its still windy but no waves. There are some good books about cruising these island with info about Santa Anna Winds and what to do. Use your engine and get out quick!! Andy Hansom Hunter 380 Vanishing Point

Hey Joe O

Where can I find information on an aftermarket wing? We recently purchased a 1984 Hunter 34 with the deep keel. Some of the reading I've done in the archives talks about the orginal design having a heavier keel and with the way storms can blow in on the Great Lakes more keel weight seems like a good idea. Any info would be appreciated.
