H34 transmission

I have a H 34 model year 1983 and I'm getting conflicting answers to how much transmission oil to put in?
The dipstick has a line mark about 1/8 inch from the bottom of it and I was told to use this as my mark! If so it seems that this would be approximately a pint or maybe less? It currently is filled to half way up the dipstick and that is maybe less than a quart! How do I know what type of fluid to use?

What make gear is it? Usually, a Hirth will take ATF, a JS will take SAE30 oil.
Make sure you're checking it correctly, usually, dipstick not screwed in.
Find the spec for your gear and check the capacity.

Thank you for your answer, just found the tag on the transmission this sheds some lite on it for me! Just have to find a clear container that is marked in liters so I can measure out .03 liters

I think you mean 0.3, not 0.03 litres. Doesn't the transmission fluid bottle have marks on it? 0.3 litres is 10 oz.

the mark on the dipstick is the full mark
300 ml is the oil capacity for the correct level, but that is when the transmission is empty

If you have the Yanmar engine and not the Westerbeke, then you'll have a Kanzaki KM3A. It likes 300cc (0.3L) of straight grade 30wt engine oil. The mark on the dipstick is the proper level, measured without screwing the dipstick into the case.. Many normal measuring cups have the markings in cc now in addition to fluid ounces, so ya can use a measuring cup to fill. On this site, in "General Downloads" you can find the Yanmar 3GMF manual that has that info in it..

Many normal computers have calculators to allow conversion of different units. :yikes::yikes::yikes: Many websites have the same conversions. :poke::poke::poke: A trick to "reading" the dipstick is to roll it on a paper towel.

Stu, here's always a pencil and your brain! One litre is 33.8 oz. One tenth is therefore 3.38 oz. Three times this, 0.3l, is 10 oz., for all practical purposes.

Stu.. some folks are "measurement challenged" .. I keep an old aluminum K&E slide rule on the boat to do metric conversions in case my phone calculator dies..

i got one a dem solur powured kalkulaturs. Problem is when it's dark out! Or inside...

My slide ruler only does km to nm. Can't get it to do liquids at all!!!:banghead::yikes::confused::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

It's easy. Even if you make some simplifying assumptions, you'll still be close enough. I just remember that a litre is 33.8 oz., and go from there. So, 1ml is .0338 oz, 10ml is .338 oz., and so on. I remember because I worked in a liquor store when the liquor and wine industry in the US switched over to metric, and I had to explain this to countless, distressed customers. The sizes changed a bit, which irked them. Nips got bigger, 1/2 pints got a little bigger, a fifth, and a bottle of wine got a tiny bit smaller, and so on.

Oh no! I just threw out my last slide rule. I figured no one would have any use for it. Oh well, I couldn't see the numbers anymore anyway.

When the world as we knew it was going to end in 2000 I pulled my slide rule and Magic Brain Calculator out of hibernation and assembled this Y2K emergency kit. They had served me well 30 years earlier in college and I was going to be ready. All I needed to do was break the glass and the young engineers wouldn't know what hit them as I completed the most complicated calculations. Of course the sky didn't fall that January 1st and now it resides in my home office. But I have my circular slide rule in the nav table for those time/speed/distance calculations when that EMP burst hits.

Claude is right that the oil level is measured to the scribed line with the dipstick just resting on the tranny case and Stu's trick using a paper towel (preferably blue) is the only way to see it.

Oh, man, that's a thing of beauty! I'm an electrical engineer, and a bit of a nerd. Have you seen a Sailor's Valentine? This one's an Engineer's Valentine.

I would kill to have that Curta calculator!

That Valentine is really great. I started as a chemist then after nearly starving, became a Materials Engineer.

I got my Curta Calculator a long time after the slide rule and sliding calculator (from my dad and grandfather, respectively). The Magic Brain Calculator kept track of the exponents when using the slide rule. When I put the Curta in the case I couldn't see it against the black background so we put a piece of white paper behind it and traced the shadow from a bright light shining on it. It's a keeper for sure.

The mini etch a sketch was so I could still do CAD drawing when the computers failed.

Indeed ! My old Dietzgen 1734 (mahogany with Teflon sliders) lives on at home, away from all the humidity on boat .. Used to use a Curta for sports car rallies in South Texas ( I navigated 'cause I could use the Curta) .. good stuff !
