I'm seriously considering either a StackPack arrangement or boom furling on my '83 H34. Any experience with either one? Any recommendations?

In Boom Furling re-fit

I recommend you price in Boom Furling with a heart defibrilator and a paramedic standing by! Hunters version o the stack pack has been a great addition to our H380. We hated the original sail cover and the time it took to roll it out move it around the lazy jacks and button it up. Hunters system (they include in now on new models) was retro fitted to my 380 last winter and has been great. Doyle who makes the real Stack Pack, wanted $1650.00 to put a stack pack on my main sail. Look at MackPack

I just installed a mackpack (www.macksails.com) on my 37c. I looked at the StackPack, but I was told my main needed to modified to put in the lazyjacks (they are integral). While this would provide finer control when dropping, it also increased the cost substantially. I spent $540 for the mackpack, and it took me only 2 hours (with one other person) to install. My father -in-law has one on his Hardin 45, and it works great, so I gave it a shot and I love it, and now I don't know what I would do without one (BTW, I don't work for Mack).

STACKPACK

I had a Stackpack installed on my P42 last fall by Doyle in Tortola, BVI, cost about $750. This is the greatest thing since sliced bread, especially on a center cockpit boat with a bimini because of the height of the boom. I checked out the in- boom furling and determined the cost benefit ratio wasn't as good as the Stackpack's.

Experience in the BVI

Stay away from things mechanical that can jam or break! Keep the boat simple and you will have a much better time. Most of the Moorings boats in Tortola BVI have the Doyle Stackpack. We chartered a Moorings 505 (Beneteau 50) with a hugh mainsail and the stackpack worked great. I recommend it.

Thanks!

Thanks for the responses! Based on this input, it looks like the Mackpack makes the most sense for me. I used one on a Beneteau 40 charter in the VI, and the combination of simplicity, effectiveness, and cost seems right.
