Anyone have any information about reshimming or replacing the lower bearing on the H34 rudder shaft.
The rudder on the H34 i'm refurbishing has some slop in all directions so I'd like to shim or replace that bearing.

Rudder Bearing

I've never tried this but a marine surveyor told me that cutting a piece of teflon sheet to fit around the base of the rudder post should help extend the life of the rudder bearing replacement. Your local marine store should carry this product, which should help tighten the post fit to the bearing.

According to Hunter Marine, regarding our model boat, 1/8 inch play at the post/bearing is within tolerance when you grab the base of the rudder and push/pull back and forth.

Our upper and lower bearings are made of UHMW material and require no lubricate. I suspect your model boat has the same bearing material, but call Hunter Marine to confirm.

Thanks for that, confirming what I thought might be a relatively easy solution. I'm planning on dropping the rudder/shaft to inspect anyway so I'll sheath it then.

Great. Please let us know how that turns out and whether this solution works for your boat.
