I am going to install refrigeration conversion in my 8 cu. ft. icebox. Is there any reason other than power consumption that I should not use the larger Cold Machine (for up to 15 cu ft) in order to get faster cool-down, larger freezer volume? Also, West Marine says that the Super Cold machine cooling water pump should only be turned on when the boat is under way. Does that mean that the unit is in the air cool mode at the dock when the pump is not on? can the unit be installed without the water cooling kit with the idea of installing it later if the boat is moved to warmer climate?

other choices

look at http://www.jademountain.com/appliances/refrigeration/nova-kool.html for a nova-kool unit. I have a cold machine on my c-400 and I am not happy with it. gary gldaniels@provide.net

The large one may end up freezing things in the icebox. However, if the box is lacking insulation or is poorly sealed, the larger unit would be the better choice. The water pump is not normally used at dockside due to the danger of getting some trash sucked up against the intake. The pump will then run dry damaging the wet end. The fan will operate regardless of the pump being run. This is to prevent losing a box full of food in the event something happens to the water circuit.Yes, the system can be installed without the water option.

Cold Machine,8 years old

We have a Cold machine installed on our H34 for 8 years, It works great, keeps food frozen and easily makes ice cubes. It is the small unit, we are in New Jersey, so the cooling needs are not as great as further south. Since there are usually only two of us aboard, I built a duplicate of the shelf that came with the boat, and use that upper portion of the box for our needs. We then use a lower setting on the fridge, or everything in the box freezes!! John Kudera s/v 50-50

Another Option

I just replace my Adler Cold Machine with a 'NovaKool'. Although the Adler lasted nine years the NovaKoool seems to be much better built, has increased BTU, and costs less than the Adler. I suggest you investigate and consider the NovaKool system.
