First of all, that's to everyone who has taken the time to respond to all my questions here!

I had a runaway bilge pump (1986 H34) that I replaced today. It was so hot, I think it would have caught fire at some point. Anyway, when I went to remove the hose, the hose crumbled, and I lost about 6 inches or so of the hose. The bilge pump cannot sit flat on the bottom of the bilge. I either need to replace the entire hose or somehow extend the current one.

My question is how hard is it to replace the bilge hose. Are there any suggestions on how to accomplish this without tearing everything apart? Can I somehow attache the new hose to the old hose and pull it through????

Thanks!

I have not done it but I think it can be done. I'd attach the new hose at the thru hull in "the pit".(starboard cockpit locker). put eyes on the hose to see if you have to cut any nylon ties in order to make it move. It runs thru the trash bin locker, under the stove, under the dish locker then to the bilge. Replace it with smooth bore flex hose from Home Depot or Lowes or equivalent.. use new fully stainless hose clamps or re-use the old ones if there is absolutely no corrosion.. Clean out the check valve.. probably a two person job with one in the pit and in the lockers watching and the other pulling from the bilge.
Good luck and let us know how it goes, PGIjan

Thanks Claude... I thought my bilge exits midship starboard side. I'll check in the morning. Compared what we went through in Chicago, I love it when it's in the canal behind the house!

Bilge Pump Hose

Here is a shot of the factory location of the thru-hull for the bilge pump in my '85. That bulkhead where the charger is mounted is the other side of the dish box on the starboard side.. My hose is going to be changed soon so I am interested in how your job goes, PGIJon ..

Here's what I found.. .Have attached to pics.... Looks like in '86 they moved the bilge thru hull forward. Secondly, I only need about 2 feet of hose. So I don't think I'm going to rerun the entire line... Well at least not right now. My question is now, what is that junction for? Another bilge?

That is a check valve, PGIJon.. The hose has a lot of volume in it and without that check valve, when the bilge pump stops, the water in the hose flows back into the bilge backfilling the bilge to the point that the pump would have to run again soon. If ya can get at it, pull it and remove the screw cap and you'll see a flapper .. all that stuff should be fairly clean and free to move. If it is corroded and messy, ya might do well to replace it..

Bilge Pump Hose...

Claude, interesting to note that my bilge pump discharge hose exits at the same place as yours, but does not have an anti-siphon loop on it there.

Will be interested to find out how your replacement goes. Have considered doing a hose replacement too, running it straight to the starboard side and installing another discharge head at a point near the A/C's raw water discharge is located. Need a new float switch as it is now.
