H34 Mast: Need More Halyards

I will be hauling the H34 early next month to get the bottom done and compression post repair. During this time, the mast will be pulled and I'd like to take advantage of the time to:

1. Replace the lighting with LED
2. Add a wind instrument for speed and direction [was looking at Garmin's GNX Wireless sailpack - as my neighbor just installed this last weekend and it is sweet!]
3. Add additional halyards - - currently, there are only 2. [Jib and Main]

I've looked and cannot find a picture of the Masthead on an H34, so I don't know what sort of options I will have. I'd like to be able to add a few more halyards.

Does someone have a picture/diagram of what they were able to accomplish in this arena?

I have port and stbd headsail halyards, a spinnaker halyard, and a main halyard. Spin halyard does not go thru the mast head, but the other three do. I have not put my eyes on the sheaves, but the halyards (port/starboard/main) run over sheaves in the mast head.

Do u think there are 4x sheaves inside our mastheads?

Also, I don’t think I have the spin halyard on the o/s of the mast. But could certainly add that.

I think three, but I could be wrong. That black/white line is spin halyard. It runs inside mast and exits topside thru a mast exit plate. I also have a mast exit sheave box for the spin pole topping lift.. My jib halyards exit at bottom thru an exit box and run to the sheaves forward of the normal mast sheaves, as you can see in the picture..

For what its worth attached are pics from the H31 mast (same vintage). while I had it down. I have a main, jib and spinnaker halyards along with a pole topping lift run internally. I also have the Garmin G2 wireless wind indicator. check the specs. the mast height or distance from unit to receiver is 50' ft. My mast height is 47' and I periodically lose the blue tooth signal and have to reboot the wireless connection. While the mast is down and the support post is opened up, you may want to reconsider and hard wire. another H31 owner I know changed from the wireless to hard wire for these reasons. good luck.

curiosity question - which yard in the NOLA area is doing the mast work and redoing the compression post? or are are u doing this yourself at a yard that will let you self perform work?

Jmce: I will have the boat hauled At Seabrook Marine. They will be doing the bottom and I’ll do (most) of the post. I agree on the wired vs. wireless as I’ll have the mast down anyhow...

Does anyone know off hand if we have the 43mm or 52mm thru-hull sensors on the H34? I'll take Jerry's advice and go "wired" since the mast is coming down, anyway... Thanks, Shannon

Kind of late for this info. Most 34s had the Kenyon mast. And most had 4 sheaves top and bottom, 2 in front and 2 in back. If you mast does not have an outside bail for a spinnaker, you'll need to install a bail and a sheave while the mast is down. Don't have good enough pics of masthead, but am including pics of bottom which clearly show the 4 halyards exiting the mast port and starboard. Also show the window I created to make connecting wires easier and safer when stepping and unstepping mast, which I need to do about 3 times each year to get out of my lake to go on longer cruises.

You should have four internal sheaves at the top, two aft and two forward. If the mast is down, just remove the top cap and fish a couple more halyards in. I have two aft and two forward. the extra one aft I use for a topping lift and spare main. Got rid of the pesky fixed topping lift. Simplifies things.

I have a 1984 Hunter 34 and was thinking of dropping the mast this offseason and replacing my 20 year old Halyards. Also need to drop the line for the Raymarine wind indicator. 2 questions, is 7/16ths the proper size for mostly a cruising boat halyards and second, once the Raymarine line enters the cabin from the compression post, where can I bury the line to get to the gauge mounted on the facade just above the cabin entry slide. There where no gauges at that location when I purchased the boat back in 2005; However, I have had ST 40 's there ever since but used a Tac Tic wireless on and off. Went thru two of them. Spotty results. Decided to go hard wired this time.
