H34 Mainsheet location

Hello! Quick question about the path of the running rigging for all the Hunter 34 owners out there.

Right now my main sheet runs right beside a pully block for the boom vang. It looks like it could be a chaffing issue to me and since the last owner replaced the running rigging I just want to double check if this was done properly.

There is a shackle that holds the boom vang pully to the boom that seems like it would be the perfect place to run the sheet through to prevent chafing with the pully.

Is this the way it is on the other Hunter 34s out there?

Thanks in advance!

Mine was modified by the previous owner to a more "race friendly" setup. I am sure someone with original mainsheet rigging will chime in:

Suggest routing the mainsheet through a block at the base on the mast then back to the cockpit through a clutch on the cabin top then to a winch.

Unfortunately, yes. That is how it is set up. I redid mine similar to what kloudie is showing. No need for th winch to haul on the boom.

The goal is to avoid friction that contributes to chafe.

Do you think that the line running through the shackle will become entangled with the shackle or the shackle will cause the mainsheet to the chafed?

I would tend away from running a line through a shackle it is just another way for the lead to become fouled in or on the shackle. I do not want my mainsheet to become fouled. I would look for another solution. Perhaps there is a need for a "fairlead" on the boom for the sheet to run through if loose is an issue.

You could get a long D shackle for the vang and the mainsheet would slide right by it without touching the vang block.
