I've had and loved my 1983 H34 for 14 years. This being her 30Th anniversary year, I wanted to give her some extra special love. Last fall it was 6 weeks in the yard on bottom and hull work - redid all the striping - paint, vinyl, including refreshing the name on the transom - lots of wax too.

This past couple of weeks, as part of my cabin refresh, I refabricated the engine hatch/step down which was 30 years beat up. New plywood (MDO I think they called it) Used left-over formica from the counter replacement I'd done previously. Made a new door for the engine compartment that the 2-step ladder is also fitted to - teak veneer on that. Detailed the ladder, including sanding steps to clean wood, and the bulkheads around that area also - including new teak edging while I was in a veneer frame of mind. Stained it all and 3 coats hof Minwax helmsman poly. Replaced the burnt out microwave with a new one, and re-built it in, and in the rear bulkhead panel, cut out a vent area and installed a Home Depot bought return air vent which gives that rear bulkhead a clean look - alhtough I'm the only one who would see it.

Enjoyed the project, and am moving on for more of the same - windows and ports when the weather breaks - all of that is in boxes in the winterized head - staged and ready to go. All new hinges too for everything that's topside to replace those original beat-up ones. Ebay was a great source for hinges by the way at a good price!

Looks like a new boat not 30 years old. Does the microwave get any abuse from it's placement?

Thanks Claude and Don! Don, it's the second one I've had in that location - first one died but got 5 years out of it. It's set back enough that it hasn't gotten kicked by foot traffic in and out, and the heat from the engine doesn't seem to bother it. I added the vent in the back to give it some breathing room though. If I get another five years out of this one, I'll be happy - only a $50.00 microwave - 700 watts.

That looks really good, Dave. Inspires me for the spring work- am thinking seriuosly of launching late and re-doing the bottom, barrier coat and all including having the keel blasted- either soda or sand I guess. We have had a microwave in that spot for about 9 years, same little cheap model. It has done fine. In very rough weather it slides a bit to the side. I have yet to get to putting an AC receptacle behind and to the side, so we still run a short extension to the receptacle in the aft cabin

Dave - REALLY LOOKS GREAT!!! Makes me want to go over and give it a try on my H34. Sure I could not get it looking this good. My MW is in a different spot but the companionway is beat up and could use the TLC.

Richard, I use an extension cord also - it's a heavy duty appliance (I think) type run from the receptical behind that small hanging locker - but I tucked it away so ya can't see it. The keel rust is a pain in the rear, and I used Petit's Rust Lock on it - we'll see next time how well that did.

Srhummer, thanks! I'm sure you could make yours look just as good. Was a lot of fun and I took my time. Good luck!

Looks nice Dave. I am suprised the microwave does well there, but since it works I plan to install one myself. I plan to install a blower for the engine compartment and that will help cool the microwave. I would appreciate some input over on my minor issues thread.
